The house is situated in a quiet, leafy setting in the mediaeval village
of Cabrieres D’Avignon in the northwest
corner of the Luberon National Park The 3000 sq metre garden is a cool oasis
on hot summer days
thanks to its pines, oaks, olive and cedar trees. Broom, rosemary, lavender
and wild thyme are abundant and
a gentle compliment to the swimming pool (10 x 5 metres) which sits in a sunny,
raised position with views of
the Luberon and Les Alpilles Mountains.
The south facing house has 3 bedrooms (2 doubles and 1 twin), a bathroom with
bath/shower, basin and
bidet, a separate toilet, entrance hall, large open plan living/dining room,
modern, spacious kitchen with
double-oven cooker, fridge, microwave, and dishwasher. The kitchen leads directly,
via French windows, to
the patio with dining table, hammock and built in BBQ.
Cabrieres D’Avignon is a well preserved village, its character kept intact
by the dry stone wall buildings
which line its narrow streets. The honey coloured stone walls and old wooden
doors hide many splendidly
landscaped inner courtyards. There is 12th century castle with a grim history,
old wash houses, a church,
and many bories (dry stone shepherds houses).
The house is a 10 minute walk to the centre of Cabrieres with its baker (said
to be the best in the area!),
butcher, grocery shop, honey shop, library, post office, tourist office, ’Mairie’
and 3 restaurants.
Cabrieres has all the advantages of being within the Luberon National Park yet
not being overwhelmed by
tourists. It’s a sleepy village in a sunny south facing position towards
the Luberon Mountains.
There are walking trails almost from our doorstep, lavender fields nearby, tennis
courts, golf, horse riding,
canoeing and hot air ballooning. Also for children there is a nearby tree top
adventure park, a snail park,
caves to explore, river trips from Avignon plus many other activities.
Cabrieres
is midway between the famous villages of Gordes, Fontaine de Vaucluse and Isle
sur la Sorgue.
Gordes, honoured by it’s plaque ‘Une des plus beaux villages de
la France’ is perched on a hillside with
spectacular views; Fontaine has its crystal clear river, weirs, water wheels
and many waterside restaurants;
Isle sur la Sorgue is famous for its Sunday antique market and its pretty setting
on an island surrounded by
the canals of the Sorgue river.
Within a half hour drive you have all the well known Luberon villages of Oppede
Le Vieux, Lacoste,
Menerbes, Bonnieux and Roussillon plus many other lesser known gems. The whole
area abounds with
restaurants and vineyards. There is a market each day of the week in one of
the nearby villages.
The summer months also bring endless fetes and festivals as the French like
to find any excuse to ‘party’.
One of our favourites is the ‘Fete du Rire’ (Fete of Laughter) in
Cavaillon. Another is the Fete du Vin in
Gordes. Just two of many!
Lacoste has an open air Opera season, as does Orange, and local Gordes has open
air concerts. This year is
Cezanne’s 100th anniversary so there are many themed art exhibitions.
